This is not an aristocracy, it’s a meritocracy. College athletics—especially basketball—is a gameof, for, and by the people. Hoops don’t care who fills them up. On the hardwood names are notinherited, they are built with effort. Extra reps in the offseason chase down extra possessions inthe game. Finished sprints in practice become buzzer beaters when it’s for real. Respect isn’t givenfor “decisions,” it’s earned with deeds. No matter if it’s in practice, the weight room, a game, aclassroom, or life after college—it is earned.
